Five months had passed since our last round of clomid. We went to have a chat with the fertility consultant about our options, we could either continue with 3 more rounds of clomid, as they only like you to do 6 maximum ideally, or we could try Letrozole.
Letrozole is actually a drug given to ladies with breast cancer who have been through the menopause, but it also helps women conceive by stimulating the ovary to produce more follicles, similarly to clomid and helps with the release of an egg which we know as ovulation. We were told it had good success rates and less side effects – sounded good to me!
4th November 2019 I began my first cycle of Letrozole. One tablet taken a day on cycle days 3 to 7 at 2.5mg a tablet.
Follicle scan one. 6 follicles measured! 5 on the left ovary measuring, 11.4mm, 9.2mm, 7.6mm, 8.7mm & 6.7mm and 1 on the right measuring 9.3mm. My uterus lining was very thin at the scan measuring only 2.65mm. We were asked to return two days later for another scan.
Follicle scan two. I didn’t take note of all the follicles on this scan for some reason but from photos I can see there were some and the uterus lining had thickened up a little to 3.58mm. We were asked to come back again in another 3 days time.
Follicle scan three. 3 follicles measured. 2 on the left ovary measuring, 10.7mm & 9.2mm, and 1 on the right measuring 11.9mm… so not great! However my lining had thickened up to 4.12mm.
We had 3 more follicle scans but not much changed and I was told that I had been unresponsive to the treatment this time around.
I did take a long time to start my period that cycle, and I had a lovely Christmas day present of a period. I tried not to let it ruin the festivities! And I already had my next set of letrozole to start!
